Cat Litter Box Tips: Dos and Don’ts

Litter box issues are among the most common and frustrating problems cat owners face. It can feel like your cat is purposefully misbehaving, but the truth is, a cat who doesn’t use their litter box is sending a clear signal that something is wrong.

As a feline behaviour professional, I want to emphasize this from the start: house soiling is VERY case-specific.

While general tips can help, a definitive solution often requires a deeper dive into your cat's unique situation.

However, a great place to start is with these universal dos and don'ts of litter box management.

Do's

  • Do Keep It Clean: Scoop the litter box at least once a day, and perform a full litter change and deep clean every one to two weeks. A clean box is a happy box!

  • Do Provide Options: The general rule of thumb is one litter box per cat, plus one.3 Placing them in different areas of your home gives your cat a choice and prevents territorial disputes.

  • Do Place It Wisely: Choose a quiet, accessible location for the litter box. Cats like their privacy, so avoid putting the box in a high-traffic area, next to a loud appliance, or in a tight, dark space.6

Don'ts

  • Don't Punish Your Cat: This is the most crucial don't. Punishing your cat for having an accident will only increase their fear and anxiety, making the problem worse.

  • Don't Use Strong Scents: Many cats are sensitive to strong fragrances. Opt for unscented litter and avoid using harsh, strong-smelling cleaners when washing the box.

  • Don't Box Them In: Avoid covered litter boxes or those placed in small closets. While they might contain the mess, they can make your cat feel trapped or vulnerable.

These are just some of the foundational tips for effective litter box management. For a more comprehensive look at the reasons behind house soiling and what you can do about it, read our latest entry in LocalPaws Magazine.
